Advanced prostate cancer experimental radioactive treatment—clinical trial decision making: patient experiences

Objectives Nested qualitative studies within clinical trials provide the opportunity to better understand participant experiences of participation and identify areas where improved support is required. The purpose this study describe lived men with advanced prostate cancer participating in TheraP trial; a randomised trial 177 Lu-PSMA-617 compared cabazitaxel chemotherapy. Methods Fifteen were recruited from interviewed at three time points during trial. Interviews inductively analysed using thematic analysis. This research paper reports results baseline interview commencement trial, focusing specifically on participants’ enrolment experiences. Results Four themes identified representing deciding participate trial: (1) hoping survive; (2) needing feel informed; (3) choosing (4) being randomised. process enrol filled indecision, emotional difficulties focused desire live. Conclusions For cancer, experience principally driven by survive but interlinked need make an informed decision as participants expressed preference for allocation experimental arm. Men seeking new treatments would benefit informational support. Trial registration number NCT03392428 , ANZUP1603.
